A couple of weeks ago I confirmed a new freelance client. I will be providing social and digital media help, alongside some PR, photography and marketing support.
It was very exciting to be hired by a business to do this because it is essentially what I do for myself and have done for other people and brands, but this gig felt different.
While it is super flattering to have someone see and appreciate your gifts, it can be nerve-wreaking. I have a background in journalism (and by a background, I mean I’m still trying to finish this degree!) and I have taught myself all things digital media since about 2012, so I was confident that I could get the job done.
But I was still apprehensive to take on this job because my brain kept telling me I was unqualified and soon enough, he would notice that and retract his offer. Like I have mentioned on this blog before, I often battle with Imposter Syndrome.
One way I have learnt to silence the lies that try and cloud my mind is to prove to myself that they are just that – lies.
I knew I have some transferable skills for PR and marketing so I just learnt the knowledge I did not know. I bought Ariatu PR’s ‘How to Write a Press Release & Get Media Coverage For Your Business’ e-Guide written by Ronke Lawal, who I have interviewed before. I also got some advice from a friend in the PR industry.
Once I rendered those those thoughts of unworthiness as invalid I was good to go. And now, here I am, beginning to establish myself as a freelance digital media consultant in Sheffield and steadily growing my media empire👸🏾
